Google seems to be prepping up its online collaboration and cloud computing tools – Google Docs for the big league. Just recently, Google Docs supported uploading fo files from your computer and sharing that files with people you collaborate with via Google Docs. Now, something good is about to happen with Google’s cloud computing service – that is interoperability with Microsoft Office files. To make this happen, Google just bought DocVerse.

DocVerse will be bringing in plug-ins that will add standard Microsoft Office operation including real-time editing and online saving.

EMC is working with Intel on a more energy-efficient version of EMC’s Atmos cloud storage system that should be available in the second half of next year, the companies said Thursday.

It’s one of several ways that Intel is working with other vendors to design more power-efficient systems for companies offering cloud computing services, Intel General Manager Jason Waxman told reporters at a joint briefing with EMC. The chip maker also announced a program with software vendors to test software management stacks for use in large, scale-out data centers.

The database provider has been slowly gaining a greater hold on the marketplace. Earlier this year, the company acquired server virtualization software provider Virtual Iron.

The talk of CloudWorld this week was VMware’s acquisition of SpringSource. The top-of-mind chatter focused on the price: $400 million plus, a very large sum for a company doing perhaps $25 million in revenues. Certainly there was a good bit of envy in this type of conversation. And, of course, the fact that SpringSource is an open source company further makes the number even more eye-watering.
