Cloud computing uses the power of the Internet

Cloud computing uses the power of the Internet
Last week I wrote about Smart Meters and the role they play in the Smart Grid. Let’s review for a moment the history of the generation of power. A major shift occurred when electricity became accessible through the generation of power from power plants. It supplanted the local generation of power through waterwheels and the like. This provision of electricity brought down the price since so many used it. The electrical grid grew out of this demand.
There is another grid that exists today in the form of millions of miles of fiber optic cable connecting computers and communication technology the world over. We know it as the Internet. And, like the replacement of locally produced power that was provided elsewhere, a shift is occurring now in the world of information technology.

As I type this document, I am utilizing one of the services of the cloud. The document that I’m creating is being done in real time online. I won’t be saving it anywhere on my computer, portable drive, or even in an e-mail to send to the editor. I also won’t be backing it up or worrying about losing it. What’s more, it’s free, provided I have access to a computer with an Internet connection and a Web browser.
