The Web site for the government’s wildly popular Cash for Clunkers program might not have crashed if it had been in a cloud.
The Transportation Department had only a few weeks this summer to create that Web site for the program; it provided information to the public and allowed car dealers to process their cash-for-clunkers deals. The site was launched in late July – and it quickly crashed, overwhelmed by a tsunami of traffic, according to Tim Schmidt, the department’s chief technology officer.
The department had to postpone the program’s launch by three days. It got the site back online – only to have it crash again on the final day of the program, when car dealerships submitted more than 20,000 vouchers for rebates.
